The Confessions

“And huge drops of lead

Poured down upon her head

Until she was dead

Yet, the cats still come out

At night to mate

And the sparrows still

Sing in the morning.”*

David Berkowitz20

The world already regarded Berkowitz as quite mad; as insane in every possible sense of the word—medically, legally, and morally. The letters he had sent to the press and the police during his killing spree provided what seemed to be strong evidence supporting this belief, as did his behaviour in court and in the hospital. Most telling of all seemed to be his prison diary, published in 1981 as an appendix to Klausner’s thoughtful book. The persona Berkowitz presented to the public, and the documents he produced, were his attempt both to explain and to disguise (perhaps from himself as well as from others) his enterprise’s inner meaning. At any rate, he felt that it was difficult for others to understand him.

The Demonology

“Questioned, he told his inquisitors he had killed at the behest of voices. ‘Demons’ had made him do it. ‘Sam,’ a 6,000-year-old man, had passed on these instructions to kill—through his dog.”
